Harry Earl Klontz, 100, passed into the presence of the Lord on Mary 12, 1998, at Altercare Retirement Center in Canton. Mr. Klontz was born in Jamestown, Ohio, on Dec. 18, 1897, to Edwin and Minnie Klontz. He was a graduate of Ross Township High School, attended Ohio Northern College, and taught school in various one-room schoolhouses throughout the area. He was married to Edith A. Staley in 1919, they moved to Akron, where they resided most of their lives, celebrating 69 years of marriage together. A veteran of World War I, he was active in Post 209 Drum & bugle Corps. he was employed at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Mr. Klontz became a meber of the Goodyear Squadron in 1925. he left Goodyer and joined the city of Akron Fire Department in July 1931, retiring as captain in 1963. For many years he had been the oldest living Fire Department retiree, and the only firefighter to reach the age of 100. Mrs. Dickman was born June 21, 1905, near Jamestown, Ohio. Her maiden name was Klontz. She earned her nursing degree from Missouri Methodist Hospital Nursing School in St. Joseph, Mo. She lived in Portland since 1938. She was a registered nurse for many years and also taught psychiatric nursing classes at Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center. She founded the Oregon Grand Ladies Encampment Auxiliary of the International Order of Odd Fellows and served as the organization's first grand matriarch. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She married Reece O. Dickman in 1937; he died in 1986.
Survivors include her daughter, Nedra D. Brill; son, Paul S. Klontz; brother, Woodrow E. Klontz; and two grandchildren.
Private interment will be in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing.
