Chase, member of the engineering firm of Modjeski, Masters & Chase and one of the builders of the Delaware River Bridge, was killed instantly today when he was hurtled from a girder of the bridge to a waterfront street 120 feet below. He had been making an inspection of the bridge preliminary to constructing a high-speed line over it from Camden to Philadelphia. A stiff wind was blowing across the river, and it swept him from the girder he was straddling. His body struck a stone abutment of the bridge, bounded to the top of a parked automobile and then fell to the cobbles of Delaware Avenue. He was taken to Hahnemann Hospital, where physicians said he had been killed at once by the fall. Mr. Chase was born in Omaha, July 267, 1888, and was graduated from Cornell University. He had been associated with Ralph Modjeski since 1909. The firm has offices in New York at 121 East Thirty-eighth Street. Mr. Chase had engaged in bridge engineering and construction in many sections of the county, beginning with the McKinley Bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis. Historic Hotels of America, article, HHA Has an Affinity for Animals, among the hotels listed was "The Little Hotel by the Sea, located at the Grande Colonial Hotel in La Jolla, Calif., consisted of seven small guest rooms when it opened in 1925. After doubling in size, the hotel underwent a major remodeling effort in 1939 which incorporated a beautiful six-passenger mahogany elevator, maing it "The Littlest Hotel in the World with an Elevator." The hotel was owned by Helena Chase Johnson, a publisher and author of children's stories. The Johnson brook included five children and two Shetland ponies named Peanuts and Pardner. The ponies became popular residents of the seaside village and were considered members of the family, participating in everything from holidays and birthday parties to nightly dinners. The Johnson's planned a grand celebration of the hotel's reopening in 1940 with a party in the hotel's rooftop solarium, accessible only by the hotel's celebrated elevator. As usual, Peanuts and Pardner were featured on the guest lists. Sadly, repeated attempts to load the pair on the new elevator were unsuccessful and the pair was relegated to the ground floor where they served as official greeters." http://www.historichotels.org/animal_tales/print Parents: Champion Clement CHASE and Lula Belle EDWARDS.
